🩺 Medicare Supplements vs. Medicare Advantage Plans:
What’s the Difference?

When it comes to covering healthcare costs in retirement, Medicare alone doesn’t always go far enough. That’s where two popular options come in: Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) and Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C). While both help reduce out-of-pocket expenses, they work in very different ways.

🌟 Medicare Supplement (Medigap)
Medigap plans are designed to “fill the gaps” in Original Medicare (Parts A & B). They help pay for things like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. These plans are sold by private insurers and work alongside Original Medicare—not in place of it.
Key Features:
•     Helps cover out-of-pocket costs not paid by Medicare
•     No network restrictions—see any provider who accepts Medicare
•     Doesn’t include drug coverage (you’ll need a separate Part D plan)
•     Standardized plans (Plans A–N) across most states

🌈 Medicare Advantage (Part C)

Medicare Advantage plans are an alternative to Original Medicare. Offered by private insurers, they bundle Part A and Part B—and often Part D—into one plan. Many also include extra benefits like dental, vision, and hearing.
Key Features:
•     Combines hospital, medical, and often drug coverage
•     May include extras like gym memberships or transportation
•     Uses provider networks (HMO or PPO)
•     May have lower premiums, but higher out-of-pocket costs
